So why Chara wants Frisk's soul?Simple:the only advantage they would have with a soul is feeling love and compassion again.Flowey also can't feel love because he's soulless,Chara's so.However:Asriel bring his compassion back because of multiple souls ,not only one and you needed to press 'save button'to make him feel again.Chara think that they could bring their ability to feel love again just with a single soul,poor kid.UNDERTALE is an indie RPG created by developer Toby Fox about a child, who falls into an underworld filled with monsters. So yeah,that indicates that Chara always wanted Frisk's soul.But theres no 'malicious'reasons that can explain it.ДЎ.its not to have control over Frisk because if Chara take Frisk's soul,the control's split 'When we combined our souls together,the control was split between us'-Asriel.That even work when the being who absorbed the soul is soulless:during Omega's flowey fight,the human souls can still take over.So Chara doesn't want Frisk's soul to have control over Frisk because they still wouldn't has any control even though they get Frisks soul.Дў.Euh.i mean this is the only malicious intent they can have. They could have enough determination to exist properly.ДЄt least thats my theory on souls ,В DT and chara and frisks relationship Now, frisk must have had an extrordinary amount of willpower, or DETERMINATION, as they had the ability to use it to change time, and bring themselves back.With this excessive amount, chara could have leeched off of the effects and remaining DETERMINATION, which could increase with LOVe, giving chara the ability to not only rekindle their conciousness, but also too create a form.This is only the left-overs that chara posseses, and yet it is far more than they themselves could sustain. This is what i believe they meant by 'you have awakened me'. Chara could not keep it up, and faded into a slumber. Chara themselves could not sustain the form, as human souls are not meant to have a magical body, just as monster souls are not meant to harbour a physical form. Their magic built them a form for their soul to possess, like a monster- they are just magic shaped by a soul.

They had more willpower and determination to do what they wanted, and to save the monsters than the other children.

This is where the difference with chara could come in. These were just children, and they all would pray do not die, but their small amounts of magic not srong enough to bring back a form, or turn back time. If no human soul dissapead after the owner died, the surface would be littered with them, seeing as humans cant absorb human souls- it must take a certain amount of magic for the soul to persist after death, or to be visible after death. This also helps the fact of souls persisting after death. If all the things in the undeground are made of magic, then humans with a lot of DETERMINATION to change that magic could do so. with the right amount of DETERMINATION to shape the magic around them, they could theoretically alter their surroundings, state of existance and even their timestram. which all the souls have, in different concentrations. Chara has no definitive soul trait or colour, the only evidence of their trait being them stating that they had determination. self confidence for example, or even something like willpower.

The red soul may be DETERMINATION or free will, and the others all their respective traits, and charas soul ,which is red, may be determination, or something similar but a bit different. This abundance of magic could sort-of supercharge all beings that fall, making all those who fall to have the ability to perform certain feats of magic, and the fact that magic is consumed via the undergrounds food supports that magic can be infused into humans. I believe that the underground, because of the barrier, is sort of tucked in neatly in its own state of existence, where magic on the surface ceased to exist and died out, the barrier kept all the magic underground locked up and safe.
